In celebration of 30 years in service, Grand Valley Health Plan is giving back to the community by offering a free weight loss challenge.

“It’s a simple challenge, lose one pound a month.” Palm Silva, Vice President of Operations for GVHP said. The program wraps up in December of 2012.

While the official weigh-in for the public is Saturday, Jan. 7, mayors from Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Walker, Hudsonville and Grandville signed up Thursday at a special luncheon and program.

“I’ve done the crash diet before you can lose the 10 pounds and sort of forget about it and gain 20 back but this is literally a challenge to change the way we live, the way we eat, the amounts we eat the exercise we get.” Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell said. ““I think it’s going to be a fun opportunity for we mayors and for our citizens” he added.

“Bringin’ Healthy Back” is open to anyone who is 13 years and older who is 12 pounds above a healthy weight.

If people are having a hard time getting motivated, perhaps prizes will help.

“Oh, there’s lots of prizes. We have over $11,000 in prizes that have been donated by various community organizations. There’s TVs, there’s family vacations, there’s fitness club memberships, there’s great opportunity to win big.” Silva said.

To be eligible for prizes, participants must: Weight-out in December 2012, show a minimum of a 12 pound weight loss from your weigh-in weight and be present at the January 2013 celebration.
