PAW PAW—A Grand Rapids man was arrested Saturday morning after showing up drunk to spend the weekend in the Van Buren County jail.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said that at 7:40 a.m. Saturday a 52-year-old Grand Rapids man who was recently sentenced in Paw Paw Circuit Court for a larceny conviction reported to the Van Buren County Jail in Paw Paw intoxicated for his weekend court-ordered sentencing program.
The man was discovered to have driven himself from Grand Rapids to Paw Paw in a 1995 Plymouth van and upon checking in with corrections officers showed indications of having consumed alcohol. Deputies investigated further and found that the man was above the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle.
The man then was arrested for second-offense operating while intoxicated.
The man admitted consuming alcohol Friday night at a bachelor party, but said he believed he was OK to drive to his weekend work program in Paw Paw on Saturday morning.
The man also was being held for being in violation of a weekend work release program.
The man is scheduled to appear Monday morning in 7th District Court and his name is being wittheld pending that court appearance.
