Several area shelters kept their doors open around the clock yesterday and today and the temperature continued to drop.
Meteorologist Kevin Craig says the weather was as cold as last night was in January 2009.
Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids accepts anyone in need of shelter if the temperature drops below freezing.
"We allow people to come in regardless of their state or their condition we take them anyway, because we don't want to see people freezing out there. We have nurses on duty in case there's any issue with frostbite," says Leonard McElveen, Counselor at Mel Trotter Ministries.
Several good samaritans were out on the streets of Grand Rapids today handing out hats, gloves, blankets and warm food and drinks.
