Haitian high school students could earn scholarships to Grand Valley State University through a fund the school hopes to develop from donations.

The project, called "Empowering Haiti Through Education Fund," would seek private donations to encourage students from Haiti to obtain their education at GVSU and return to their country to "make a difference in Haiti," said Mark Schaub of the Padnos International Center.

Though the announcement of the fund comes on the first anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti, especially the capital of Port-au-Prince, the idea has its origins in discussions years ago between geology professor Peter Wampler and Schaub. Wampler has done water quality research in Haiti.

A information meeting will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Chez Olga, a Haitian restaurant at 1441 Wealthy St. SE in the Eastown section of Grand Rapids.
