Prince George's board to vote on Obama school name
President Barack Obama's name would grace a new Prince George's County elementary school a few miles from the White House under a proposal set for a vote tonight, barely five months after he took office. If the Prince George's school board approves the plan, Barack Obama Elementary School would be the first in Maryland named after the president. The school, under construction in Upper Marlboro, would not be the first in the country named after Obama. The Hempstead Union Free School District in New York voted to rename Ludlum Elementary after him in November shortly after his election victory. Since then, several other school boards nationwide have taken steps to name new schools or rename old ones after the president. Some members of the Prince George's school board said naming a school after Obama would inspire students. "He comes from the same cloth that many of our kids come from: single-family home, public assistance, being raised by grandparents," said board member Pat Fletcher. But board member Linda Thornton Thomas said she would prefer that the school be named after a local figure.
