A drone crashed near Salisbury in May, following revelations about loose auditing of their overseas use. With this coming after recent local anti-drone demonstrations and plans to arm domestic police drones, here's a look at who has approval to fly unmanned aircraft in US airspace, as of spring 2012.

What the map shows
Earlier this year, after a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Federal Aviation Administration released a list of certifications for drone flights in the United States. The Maryland part of that list comprises two entities based within the state: The U.S. Department of the Navy, based in Bethesda, and the Queen Anne's County Office of the Sheriff.
