A 15-year-old girl from Allegany County has died after being struck by a car Tuesday along Coastal Highway in Ocean City, police said Wednesday.
The driver of the car that struck her, a 17-year-old boy from Worcester County, was not charged and was released by police at the scene.
Neither have been identified due to their ages, police said.
Police first responded to the intersection of Coastal Highway and 21st Street about 5:45 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Their investigation showed that four girls were waiting to cross from the east side of the highway to the west when three of them ran across the highway's northbound lanes to a median, police said. They then attempted to run across the southbound lanes of the highway as well — just north of the intersection's crosswalk and despite a signal telling them not to cross, police said.
As they did, the 15-year-old girl was struck, police said.
Paramedics treated the girl at the scene before she was transported with life-threatening injuries to Atlantic General Hospital, police said. She was later transferred to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where she died of her injuries, police said.
Her body has been transported to the chief medical officer in Baltimore for an autopsy, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
