A Baltimore man was fatally shot by a Howard County police officer during a joint effort by Baltimore City and Howard County police to arrest him at a home in Columbia late Thursday, according to Howard County police.
The man, who was not identified late Thursday because his family hadn't yet been notified of his death, was wanted on assault, reckless endangerment and gun charges stemming from a domestic dispute with his child's mother early Thursday morning, Howard police said.
A resident of the home, where one of the man's acquaintances lived, let officers in the front door after they knocked, Howard police said.
Officers at the rear of the home were then "confronted" outside by the man, who "did not comply" with repeated police orders to "show his hands," Howard police said.
During the encounter, a Howard County officer shot the man, who was later pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital, Howard police said.
The charges the man was being sought on stemmed from the early morning hours of Thursday, Howard police said, when the man allegedly entered the Baltimore home of his estranged girlfriend. The man woke the woman up by putting a gun to her head, threatened to kill her, then assaulted her, Howard police said.
He held her in the home at gunpoint until later in the morning, when the woman was able to flee and call 911, Howard police said.
The man then fled with the couple's 2-year-old child, Howard police said.
Baltimore City police called Howard County police about 7:45 p.m. for assistance in apprehending the man after learning he was at the Columbia home, Howard police said.
No one else was injured during the incident, Howard police said. Police did not say whether the 2-year-old child was in the home when police arrived.
Detectives were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting late Thursday, Howard police said.
The officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative duty while an internal affairs investigation is conducted, Howard police said.
No other information was available late Thursday.
