Howard County police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that sent a woman in critical condition to Maryland Shock Trauma Center Tuesday night.
Police are categorizing the crash as a "serious personal injury collision."
The collision occurred at about 8:45 p.m. when Mary Ann Cecile Levant, 64, of Columbia, was traveling east on Route 32 near Route 29 in a 2003 Toyota Avalon. Levant lost control of the vehicle and struck the guardrail on the shoulder of the road, police said. After hitting the guardrail, the Toyota struck a 1996 Ford Explorer, which also was driving on Route 32, according to police.
Levant was taken to Shock Trauma, where she is in critical condition.
The driver of the Ford, Richie Junior Burgess, 41, of Columbia, was not injured in the crash.
Police said their initial investigation revealed speeding was a contributing factor in the collision.
Officers closed the ramp connecting southbound Route 29 and eastbound Route 32 from 8:46 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tuesday due to the crash.
