Water rescue teams search for man in bay near Aberdeen

Swift-water rescue teams spent hours searching for a man in the Bush River and Chesapeake Bay near the Perryman area of Harford County late Sunday, according to a Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association spokesman.

About 8:21 p.m., as a large storm system swept through the area, county police received a 911 call regarding two men struggling in the water near the 2100 block of Park Beach Drive, said Dave Williams, the spokesman.

Members of the county's volunteer technical rescue team and the Aberdeen Fire Department responded to find one man out of the water but the other man still missing, Williams said.

The search will resume Monday morning, said Sgt. Brian Albert, spokesman for the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

The U.S. Coast Guard, which also responded, identified the missing man as Khaam Xairabong, 35, and said he was last seen wearing white cargo shorts and no shirt.

The Coast Guard said the second man was rescued from the water by a "good Samaritan in a canoe."

Paramedics evaluated the rescued man, who was not identified, for injuries as other crews began the search for Xairabong, Williams said.

Williams said he did not know how the two people had ended up in the water.

By 10 p.m. Sunday, those crews had been joined by rescue personnel with the Maryland State Police and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and were still searching for the missing man, Williams said.

Divers were on stand-by as rescuers in boats used side-scan sonar to search the water and a helicopter crew used infrared to try to locate the man, Williams said.

But by 10:45 p.m., the unsuccessful search was called off, Williams said.

"After dark and with the stormy weather, just putting divers in the water without having an actual target can be very dangerous," Williams said.

Elsewhere in the county Sunday night, lightning caused a home in Bel Air to catch fire, Williams said.
