Dewey Beach slaying part of apparent murder-suicide

The killing of a woman in a Dewey Beach motel room this month appears to have been the result of a violent murder-suicide.

Danielle Mehlman, 26, of Bensalem, Pa., was found dead about 10:45 a.m June 18 by a maid at the Atlantic Oceanside Motel in the 1700 block of Coastal Highway, which cuts through the center of the small Delaware vacation town north of Ocean City.

A medical examiner has since ruled her death a homicide, caused by her being stabbed multiple times.

Police believe Mehlman had been sharing the room with Pawan Kumar, 26, of Wilmington, Del., who was found dead the following day in a motel room in Belleville, N.J.

A medical examiner there has ruled his death a suicide, caused by a drug overdose, according to Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County prosecutor's office. The office assists in death investigations in the county. A toxicology report that will identify the drug used has not been completed.

Mehlman's killing was the first murder in Dewey Beach, which is popular with Maryland vacationers, since the town was incorporated in 1981, and shook local residents and vacationers when it occurred.
