City homicide detectives were investigating the death of a 1-year-old girl in West Baltimore on Wednesday, after paramedics found her in bad shape and rushed her to Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Police were first dispatched to a home in the 800 block of North Stricker Street in Harlem Park shortly after 10 a.m., where they found the girl. She was declared dead upon arrival at Shock Trauma.
Homicide detectives were then notified to begin investigating the cause of the girl's death because of its "suspicious" nature, said Det. Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.
"It's a suspicious death, as it always is when anyone young dies," Monroe said. "There has to be an autopsy, there has to be an investigation, and if that investigation leads to something criminal, then it does."
There had been no criminal charges filed as of Wednesday night, Monroe said.
Monroe did not have further details as to what made the girl's death suspicious, other than her age.
No further details were available late Wednesday.
