Police kill man in Belair-Edison

A Baltimore police officer fatally shot a man who attacked another officer Saturday afternoon inside a home in East Baltimore, police said.

At 5:18 p.m., two officers responded to a call for a report of a "mental case" in the 3500 block of Elmora Avenue, in the Belair-Edison neighborhood, and were quickly confronted by a man who attacked without warning, said Detective Donny Moses, a police spokesman.

During the attack, one of the officers fell into a glass table, Moses said. While the officer was down, the man attempted to grab the officer's gun.

In response, the second officer shot the man, the detective said.

The 31-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he died, Moses said.

Information about the officers is expected to be released Sunday, he said. The officer who fell into the table was taken to Shock Trauma with injuries that are not life-threatening.

A homicide investigation has begun, Moses said. That is standard procedure for police-involved shootings, he said.
