A fire caused extensive damage to three houses — one occupied, two vacant — in the 300 block of Yale Ave. in Baltimore on Thursday night, a fire official said.

Fire crews responded to the scene, in the Irvington neighborhood adjacent to the campus of Mount St. Joseph High School, at 9:40 p.m. to find a wooden, two-story vacant home billowing with smoke and on fire, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a city fire spokesman.

Firefighters "began a rapid attack on the fire," Cartwright said, but couldn't immediately prevent it from jumping to the occupied home and another vacant home.

By 10:30 p.m., the fire had been brought under control, and firefighters were working to douse the houses with water to prevent the flames from reigniting, Cartwright said.

All three houses were heavily damaged, he said, but no one was injured.

The fire and its cause remained under investigation late Thursday.
