The driver of a tractor-trailer that crashed on southbound Interstate 95 Wednesday evening has been charged with driving while impaired by alcohol, police said.
Glenn Grise, 46, of West Orange, N.J., crashed a semitrailer around 8:15 p.m. on an overpass above Interstate 895, turning the truck over in the left lane of I-95, just north of the Harbor Tunnel, according to Sgt. Kirk Perez, a spokesman for the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
W.R. Grace and Co., which has several Maryland locations.
Two containers fell off the overpass, landing on I-895, which was temporarily closed while tunnel lanes changed direction, Perez said. The concrete additive, which was not hazardous, and diesel fuel spilled from the truck and dripped onto cars as they passed under I-95.
Southbound I-95 was closed for more than seven hours while the spill was removed. Both directions of I-895 were closed for over four hours, until roughly 1 a.m.
The additive, which Perez said is about 50 percent water, could be washed off before drying. After drying, he said, car owners would need to go through normal accident insurance procedures to have the paint-like substance removed.
Perez did not know the cause of the crash, which is still being investigated. In addition to the charge for driving while impaired, he said, Grise has been charged with negligent driving, failure to obey lane directions and driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was also charged with a violating a federal trucking regulation relating to drinking prior to operating a commercial vehicle.
A phone call to G. Grise Trucking was not immediately returned Thursday evening.
