Officer Stephen Sistek, 46, a 17-year veteran assigned to the Patrol Division, was identified as the officer who fired his weapon at Richard Jenkins Jr. Sistek has never before been involved in a shooting incident, according to the department.
Jenkins, 25, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. He has been charged with firearms offenses and assault.
A semiautomatic pistol was recovered at the scene. The homicide unit is investigating the incident, which is routine in police-involved shootings.
In accordance with department policy, Sistek's police powers have been suspended pending the investigation.
