Baltimore police have identified the body recovered Sunday from the Inner Harbor as a 36-year-old man had been released from a detention facility and had never come home.
The body of Benjamin L. Bell was spotted floating in the harbor around 9 a.m. Sunday by a city sanitation worker near the 400 block of E. Pratt St. A Division of Correction identification card was found in his pocket, and authorities reached out to his family, who had filed a missing persons report on Wednesday, said Detective Vernon Davis, a city police spokesman.
Relatives said they had called the prison where he was being held to check on him and learned he had been released on Dec. 7. A cause of death was not immediately known.
Court records show Bell has several minor arrests and was charged with marijuana possession last December. According to the records, he failed to appear for a court hearing in August and was arrested and held without bond on Nov. 28. He was found guilty on Dec. 7, given a six-month suspended sentence and was released.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
