The body of a male between 15 and 20 years old was found in Baltimore's Inner Harbor early Sunday morning, police and fire officials reported.

Emergency responders, including divers with the city's fire department and city police officers, responded to 301 Light St. at about 3:15 a.m. after a caller reported a body in the water, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a fire spokesman.

Divers entered the water near the Inner Harbor's promenade and discovered the body, Cartwright said.

The operation, which was not a rescue but a recovery effort, took until about 4 a.m., Cartwright said.

The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy, Cartwright said.

There was no initial indication of foul play, but detectives are awaiting the results of the autopsy, said Det. Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman.

Neither Cartwright nor Silbert knew the condition of the body and could not give an estimate of how long the young man had been in the water.

"I don't know if he was clothed or if the body was decomposed or anything like that," Cartwright said.

Silbert said more information would likely be available Monday, pending completion of the autopsy report.
