A former Glen Burnie High School English teacher faces the possibility of spending up to 10 years in prison after entered pleas Friday to charges that he had sexual encounters with female students, said a spokeswoman for Anne Arundel County prosecutors.
Jeffrey Robert Sears Jr., 30, of Glen Burnie, was charged in December with having sexual activity over two years with three students who were ages 15 and 16 – including intercourse in his classroom, car and bedroom, with a sexual encounter with one girl in a school stairwell. Sears entered Alford pleas in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor and one court of a fourth-degree sex offense, said Kristin Fleckenstein, a spokeswoman the county State's Attorney's Office. The pleas mean that Sears, the married father of a daughter, did not admit guilt, only that prosecutors had evidence that could lead to convictions.
Prosecutors will seek a 10-year prison term, Fleckenstein said, although the maximum sentence could have topped 50 years. Sears, who was also a former boys junior varsity basketball coach, can ask for a shorter sentence. Sentencing is scheduled for April 27.
