Anne Arundel County police said Marcus Antonio Anderson, 27, of Odenton, died before reaching a hospital after the 9:47 p.m. crash. His passenger, who was not named by police, was taken to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center, where he was in stable condition, police said.
The bus driver, Astrea Narcis of Baltimore, and eight of the 10 passengers on the No. 14 bus were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said.
Police said Anderson's 2002 Lincoln LS was eastbound on Eighth Avenue just west of Crain Highway when it crossed the center line on a curve and hit the westbound bus. The car went backward more than 40 feet, caught fire and stopped in the eastbound lane next to the bus, police said. Officers extinguished the blaze before anyone was hurt by it, police said.
Police said they did not know why Anderson's vehicle failed to negotiate the curve. They said speed and driver error appeared to have contributed to the crash, but they said they did not know whether alcohol or drugs were involved. Neither Anderson nor his young passenger were wearing seat belts, police said.
The bus driver, Narcis, was wearing a seat belt; the bus passenger area has no seat belts, according to police.
