Pedestrian struck, killed in Anne Arundel accident

Anne Arundel County police report that a 63-year-old man was struck by a car and killed Monday evening as he attempted to cross Ritchie Highway in the Jumpers Hole area.

According to police, Raymond Richard Walkup, of no fixed address, died from injuries he sustained when he was struck by a Mercury Grand Marquis traveling southbound on Ritchie Highway, north of Jumpers Hole Road.

Police were called to the scene at 7:44 p.m., and found the injured man and driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis.

Police said Walkup was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he died from his injuries. Police say Walkup was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing, was not crossing at a designated crosswalk and failed to yield the right of way to the vehicle.

They said the initial investigation indicated pedestrian error as the cause of the accident, and that alcohol use by the pedestrian also appeared to be a contributing factor. The department's Traffic Safety Section is conducting an investigation, police said.
