Bill recognizing social studies as one of state's core disciplines
A bill to restore the state's recognition of social studies as one of the core disciplines in K-12 education has won bipartisan support. Proponents said the role of civics, government and other social studies has been de-emphasized in the decade since the No Child Left Behind Act put more emphasis on reading, science and math. It would not, however, restore the assessment test that used to be given in social studies.
