9. Matt Antonelli, infielder

This is Duquette's textbook undervalued player. The 17th pick overall by the San Diego Padres in 2006, Antonelli didn't hit in his brief call-up to the majors in 2008. Injuries and inconsistency — as well as lofty expectations — buried him in the Padres' organization. They gave up on him last offseason, and the Washington Nationals picked him up and left him in the minors all year. Duquette aggressively signed Antonelli this winter, gave him a major league roster spot and said he would compete for a spot at third base, second base or utility infield. The owner of a career .373 on-base percentage in the minors, Antonelli has a minor league option remaining, meaning that if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster, he can demoted without being exposed to waivers.
