A woman was injured in a horse-riding accident during the barrel races at the Brown County Fair Tuesday afternoon, said Lt. Tim Medenwald of Aberdeen Fire and Rescue.
Elaine Hagen of Webster was taken by ambulance to Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center after she fell off her horse as it stumbled at the end of her run, said Val Kamen, a fellow rider who saw the accident in the horse arena.
Hagen remains at the hospital in fair condition, an administrative resource nurse said Tuesday afternoon.
Kamen said Hagen's horse, which is named MIP Driftin Sixlet, probably stepped on Hagen after the fall.
A barrel race requires contestants to ride into the arena on horseback, do a complete circle around three barrels set up in the arena without touching a barrel, then exit the arena as quickly as they can.
Several dozen people were in attendance when the accident happened. The races continued after the incident.
