There is a lot of energy in the newsroom right now.
Could it be all of our new interns?
Cara Ball and Racquel Bethea are the latest summer additions to our staff.
They come to us as part of the Multimedia Scholars program through the Freedom Forum Diversity Institute in Nashville, Tenn.
They, along with several other Diversity Institute students, were given indepth multimedia and journalism training over a two-week period in Nashville.
Many of the other students are also being placed at American News sisternewspapers around the country.
Cara is a graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She has experience in broadcast journalism, social media and documentary storytelling. This is her first time at a newspaper. She is originally from Westland, Mich.
Racquel will be a junior at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., where she is majoring in journalism and media studies. She has been editor-inchief and staff writer at her college paper, the Bennett Banner. She is from Durham, N.C.
Both are in South Dakota for the first time. They’ll have plenty of time to learn all about the state over the course of their eight-week internships.
They are doing a great job so far, and have done some very good reporting and video storytelling.
There are more new faces to come. Next week, I’ll introduce you to our newest full-time journalist.
More videos online
Our interns are helping us step up our video coverage for the summer, but I’ve been really happy with all of our videos.
Will Elkins is the designated video and mobile content leader at the American News. Many of you know Will’s voice from the “Game of the Week” live play-byplay. With no games of the week during the summer, Will is helping our staff plan and execute all kinds of video storytelling.
Friday, Will inaugurated a new video series, “This Week in 60 Seconds.” It’s a quick-cut look at some of the highlights from the week, using photos, video and audio to sum up the week that was in northeast South Dakota.
It will be online Fridays.
If you’ve not been on AberdeenNews.com to watch videos lately, take a few minutes to see a few of these:
¿ An interview with participants and overview of the DreamMakers Camp in Aberdeen.
¿ Behind-the-scenes with the cast of Aberdeen Community Theater’s “Spamalot!”
¿ Checking on area mosquito traps.
¿ Helmet-cam video of the A-Town Roller Girlz in action.
¿ Videos from weekend festivals around the area.
