Alyxis Perry, who was Miss Frederick Area, came to her aid. “Who are you looking for? Can I help you?” Perry asked.
The woman turned out to be one of the judges, which probably didn't hurt Perry's chances in the South Dakota Snow Queen Festival.
Saturday night, Perry became the 66th South Dakota Snow Queen.
Perry's mother, Candi, says helping someone is typical of her daughter.
Alyxis, who’s usually called Aly, “genuinely is nice. She just cares about everybody and enjoys meeting new people,” Candi said. Her daughter is “very outgoing.”
“If somebody needs help, I'll go and help them,” says Ali, who helps young students prepare for MathCounts and also works with younger players who will replace her in the post next season on the Leola-Frederick basketball team.
Aly, who lives in Westport, is a senior at Frederick Area High School. According to the program, she is the first Snow Queen from Frederick.
There will be some confusion over the next year when the South Dakota Snow Queen and Junior Snow Queen appear together. The Junior Snow Queen is Alexandra Farber of Britton-Hecla, or Alex for short.
Aly got to bed at 1:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, which was about an hour earlier than the new Junior Snow Queen retired a week earlier.
“So I felt pretty responsible getting to bed that early,” she said, smiling.
After she won, Aly received 25 texts Saturday night and 20 on Sunday morning. “They just keep comin’ on in,” she said Sunday.
Aly turns 18 today. She'll spend part of her birthday getting two free dresses — one “poofy” and the other a straight gown — today at Brides ’n’ Belles.
There's nothing poofy about the 5-foot-10 Perry on the basketball court.
What kind of player is she?
“Dedicated,” she says.
Aly is one of three co-captains on the team. She's been playing with the other two captains, Heather Underberg and Kayla Haas, since they were in second grade. They know each other so well that “we can read each other's eyes” on the court, she says.
Candi, Aly and her 21-year-old brother, Jake, live in Westport. She also has a halfsister, Megan Mabe, 25, who is in the Army stationed in Hawaii. Candi is a nursing supervisor at Avera St. Luke's.
Aly was Frederick Area’s Junior Snow Queen when she was a freshman. She entered this year's festival because she had so much fun last time.
