A Columbia man charged with child abuse is accused of breaking more than a half dozen of the infant victim's bones.
Jason R. Mettler, 26, is scheduled for a Feb. 2 court hearing.
According to court paperwork, the child was taken to Sanford Clinic in Aberdeen on Jan. 3. One examination revealed four fractured ribs, a fractured wrist, fractures in both legs and a fracture on the left side of the baby's head, according to the paperwork. At the time, the infant was roughly 3 months old.
Mettler told law enforcers that once, when changing the baby's diaper, he grew agitated because the infant urinated and defecated on him, according to court documents. Mettler said he took the baby's "right leg and struck him multiple times in the head with his own foot," the report said.
Cruelty to or abuse of a minor is a felony punishable by as much as 15 years in state prison and a $30,000 fine.
Mettler is out of jail on bond.
