Roster recaps

STARTER: Joe Flacco. BACKUP: Tyrod Taylor. COMMENT: There were no surprises here because Flacco and Taylor were locks to make the team. It's still undecided whether a banged-up Taylor (left shoulder contusion) will remain the primary backup. There weren't many intriguing names released Saturday, and Sage Rosenfels might be available if he reaches an injury settlement with the New York Giants.

STARTERS: Ray Rice RB, Vonta Leach FB. BACKUPS: Ricky Williams and Anthony Allen. COMMENT: The only running back remaining from last season is Rice. Leach is the prototypical fullback, and Williams is the consummate backup. Allen got the nod over Jalen Parmele after averaging 6.8 yards on 11 carries this preseason.

STARTERS: Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans. be surprised if the Ravens add another veteran interior lineman before the season opener. Although Mattison did an admirable job, it would be smart for the Ravens to upgrade there considering Birk isn't fully recovered from surgery.

STARTERS: DT Haloti Ngata, NT Terrence Cody, DE Cory Redding. BACKUPS: DE Arthur Jones, NT Brandon McKinney, DE Pernell McPhee and DE Michael McAdoo. COMMENT:There's been an influx of youth here with Cody stepping into a starting role, Jones pushing for a starting role and McAdoo surprisingly making the roster after joining the Ravens one day after going unpicked in the supplemental draft on Aug. 22. The Ravens might be tempted to slip McAdoo onto the practice squad after they add a veteran cut over the weekend. Ngata, Redding and McKinney were all locks to make the team.

STARTERS: OLB Terrell Suggs, ILB Ray Lewis, ILB Jameel McClain, OLB Jarret Johnson. BACKUPS: OLB Paul Kruger, ILB Dannell Ellerbe, OLB Sergio Kindle, ILB Brendon Ayanbadejo, OLB Albert McClellan, ILB Jason Phillips. COMMENT: The Ravens return the same BACKUPS: David Reed, Torrey Smith, Tandon Doss and LaQuan Williams. COMMENT: Boldin and Evans are the perfect complement of toughness and speed. It'll be interesting to see who steps up as the No. 3 wideout. Reed is suspended for the season opener after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Smith can stretch the field, but he struggled with catching the ball this preseason. Doss has been the more polished rookie. Williams has been the team's most pleasant surprise of the preseason with big catches and punt returns.

STARTER: Ed Dickson. BACKUPS: Dennis Pitta and Kris Wilson. COMMENT: The Ravens will replace Todd Heap with a combined effort from Dickson and Pitta. Both are young and athletic. They also both made big plays down the seam this preseason.

STARTERS: LT Bryant McKinnie, LG Ben Grubbs, C Matt Birk, RG Marshal Yanda, RT Michael Oher. BACKUPS: G-T Mark LeVoir, C Bryan Mattison, T Jah Reid. COMMENT: The Ravens chose to keep an extra defensive back (Chykie Brown) and defensive lineman (Michael McAdoo) by going with fewer offensive linemen. Don't starting four from a year ago, but the supporting cast is a bit different. Kruger has returned to being a linebacker after trying to become a defensive end last year. Kindle could provide some pass rush after missing all of last season with a head injury. And McClellan, a practice squad member last year, should make an impact on special teams.

STARTERS: TBD with cornerbacks. FS Ed Reed, SS Bernard Pollard. BACKUPS: CB Jimmy Smith, CB Domonique Foxworth, CB Cary Williams, SS Tom Zbikowski, FS Haruki Nakamura, CB Chris Carr, CB Lardarius Webb, CB Chykie Brown. COMMENT: The only guaranteed starter is Reed, who led the NFL in interceptions last season. Pollard is expected to get the other starting safety spot over Zbikowski. The starting cornerbacks could be any combinations of rookie first-round pick Smith, Foxworth, Williams and Carr.

KICKER: Billy Cundiff PUNTER: Sam Koch LONG SNAPPER: Morgan Cox COMMENT: There was no question that this group would return. Cundiff is coming off his first Pro Bowl, and Koch is looking to reach his first one. Cox is back after starting training camp on the PUP because of knee surgery in December. The Ravens have some questions with the return game. As far as kickoffs, the Ravens have to decide between David Reed, Torrey Smith and LaQuan Williams. The current depth chart has Reed on kickoff returns and Webb on punt returns.
