Local students receive National Merit Scholarships

Taylor L. Mendoza, a Liberty High School student, and Hannah S. Rose, a Westminster High School student, were among the first group of winners in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Mendoza was awarded National Merit Mary E. Beyerle Scholarship. The sponsor of the award is a trust, established by the estate of Mary E. Beyerle, and Merit Scholarship awards are provided for selected finalists from Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Rose received the National Merit Leidos Inc. Scholarship. Headquartered in Reston, Virgina, Leidos is a global science and technology solutions and services leader supporting missions for government and commercial customers. Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.
