Brigadier General Anna Mae Hays

Brig. Gen. Anna Mae Hays was the first woman in the U.S. military to be promoted to a general officer rank. An Allentown High graduate, she joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1942 and served in India during World War II. In 1967, she was promoted to colonel and became the 13th Chief of the Army Nurse Corps. She was promoted to brigadier general in 1970.
