History abounds in Easton, a town that was founded at the confluence of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers by Thomas Penn, son of William Penn. George Taylor, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, purchased and lived in a building constructed in 1753 by Jacob and Katrinna Bachmann, which was a tavern and also served as Northampton County’s first courthouse. Visitors included George Washington and Ben Franklin. The town was laid out in a grid radiating from Centre Square, which was constructed about 1765. The square is the site of the oldest, continuously operating farmers market — started in 1791 — and still serves as the hub of the town. Revitalization of the city is underway with the expansion of the Crayola Experience being just one of the projects that is spurring on rejuvenation.
