In 1969 while he was in London, his wife -- his eight-months pregnant wife, actress <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB003820" title="Sharon Tate" href="/topic/entertainment/movies/sharon-tate-PECLB003820.topic">Sharon Tate</a> --  and four others were killed in the couple's Hollywood home by members of <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PECLB00434121" title="Charles Manson" href="/topic/crime-law-justice/crime/charles-manson-PECLB00434121.topic">Charles Manson</a>'s "Family."<br>

The trial for the Tate and subsequent LaBianca murders begain in June 1970 and lasted 225 days. At that time it was the longest and costliest trial ever in the U.S.
