Liu honored by foundationState Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) was given a "Trailblazer Award" May 4 by the Women's Foundation of California.
The honor was in recognition of Liu's support of the nonprofit Women's Policy Institute, which teaches women activists and organizations about public policy and the legislative process.
The Women's Foundation is sponsoring Liu's SB 1084, which would create a two-year, bipartisan task force aimed at reducing poverty among Californians. The bill is pending in the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Local to oversee Caltech's marketing, communicationsKristen Brown has been appointed assistant vice president for marketing and communications at Caltech, it was announced this week.
Brown grew up in La Cañada and graduated from Westridge School in Pasadena. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Smith College and studied architecture at Parsons School of Design in New York and architectural history at the University of Virginia.
Brown will oversee the online communications, media relations, and editorial and content development departments and will report to Peter Hero, vice president for development and institute relations.
"We're very fortunate to have Kristen joining us, with her exceptional skills and her background of academic and corporate responsibilities," Hero said.
Brown brings a track record of work at global organizations in higher education, entertainment and consumer goods, including the American Film Institute, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Nestle USA.
