Welch's most controversial role was in the 1970 film "Myra Breckinridge" in which she played a transsexual. She took the role in the film directed by writer <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEHST002037" title="Gore Vidal" href="/topic/arts-culture/gore-vidal-PEHST002037.topic">Gore Vidal</a> in order to be taken more serious as an actress, but the film flopped with critics and audiences alike. Ironically, she starred opposite future film critic Rex Reed.
