“Good Morning, Vietnam,” Robin Williams

“Good Morning, Vietnam” Robin Williams earned his first lead actor Oscar nomination for his performance in Barry Levinson’s 1987 comedy hit based on a true story. Williams really gets the opportunity to strut his manic comedic timing as well as demonstrate his dramatic prowess as Adrian Cronauer, a military DJ stationed in Saigon during the Vietnam War. In Andy Dougan’s biography, “Robin Williams,” the actor said that the film “combined two worlds that I’d kept secret. One was stand-up comedy, the other was acting.... In this one I thought I would try to put them together. The character is basically 98% me.” In fact, Levinson let the cameras roll on Williams' improv radio monologues; all of those sequences were shot in just seven days.
