Bud Abbott and Lou Costello

Released in January, 1941, nearly a year before Pearl Harbor , this zippy slapstick comedy was one of the biggest hits of the year — it made $4 million — and one of Abbott and Costello’s most enjoyable vehicles. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello play two con artists — they sell 10-cent “silk” ties — who volunteer to be drafted in the peacetime Army in order to escape the cops who are on to their con. Most of the comedy team’s dialogue, especially the riotous “drill sequence” was ad-libbed. Director Arthur Lubin employed several cameras so as not to lose any of the comedians’ spontaneity. The popular Andrew Sisters also star and sing the Oscar-nominated tune, “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy From Company B.” Six years later, Abbott and Costello starred in the weak sequel, “Buck Privates Come Home.”
