'National Treasure: Book of Secrets'
The people speak: $457 million worldwide
The critics speak: Kirk Honeycutt in the Hollywood Reporter wrote "It's virtually the same movie with new locations. Oh, plus Helen Mirren. Not a bad addition, but the popcorn fun is gone." Rotten Tomatoes ranking: 32%
Lesson learned: Don't be afraid to fill in the gaps. "The Da Vinci Code" was a big hit, but it's taken Dan Brown years to write a follow-up. What's a public jonesing for pseudo-historical puzzle-adventures to do? Leap at all the knock-offs and similar flicks to come along in its wake. Judging by the cover of Brown's next thriller, "The Lost Symbol," the location is Washington, D.C. Too bad, "National Treasure" was there first.
