'Top Gun'

The moment: It all happens in a little game of two-on-two. Relax! Mind out of the gutter! We’re talking about volleyball here. Maverick ( Tom Cruise), with a hot date set for later in the evening, partners up with Goose ( Anthony Edwards) to take on a duo led by arch-rival Iceman (Val Kilmer). Shirts come off for no real reason, and this extended scene is full of sweaty tension.
Milestone or misfire? Milestone. Why does this volleyball scene play out for as long as it does? We don’t know, but hey – boys will be boys, and the game ratchets up the movie’s love-hate rivalry. It also sets up this everyone-makes-nice closing line: “You can be my wingman any time,” Iceman tells Maverick near “Top Gun’s” end. And they go in for the kiss! Well, not really — just a rough man-hug.
