Historical drama: 'Little Ashes'
Pattinson explored artistic and sexual freedoms as Salvador Dali in 2008's "Little Ashes." The 1920s drama is the story of three college friends, the famous surrealist painter Dali, poet Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran) and aspiring filmmaker Luis Buñuel (Matthew McNulty). A romance, rumored to have happened in real life, develops between Dali and Lorca, while Buñuel begins to feel left out.
"Little Ashes" wasn't Pattinson's first period piece. The actor actually had a small role in Reese Witherspoon's costume drama "Vanity Fair" in 2004. Although his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, they are available on the DVD extras. The funny thing is that Witherspoon portrays his mother in the film, while in "Water for Elephants" she plays his love interest.
