Rafer Johnson

LOS ANGELES July 22-Aug. 14, 1984: Summer Olympics Rafer Johnson, the 1960 gold-medal decathlete, takes a moment to reflect after lighting the Olympic flame at the Memorial Coliseum for the 1984 Summer Games, a shining moment in Los Angeles sports history. After protests in the '68 Games, Israeli athletes being kidnapped and killed in Munich in '72, out-of-control costs for Montreal in '76 and a boycott of Moscow in '80, the U.S. and L.A. helped deliver a colorful and fiscally responsible Olympics in '84.
