'Marie Antoinette' (2006)

Fresh from her Oscar win for "Lost in Translation," Sofia Coppola´s "Marie Antoinette" seemed very promising after it was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Her vision of the doomed queen (Kirsten Dunst) was not a traditional biopic. Candy colors and a daring soundtrack set it apart from other period pieces. The 1938 movie version starring Norma Shearer received four Oscar nominations. However, Coppola's $40 million production earned only $16 million in U.S. theaters and got, at best, mixed reviews. It was nominated and won for best costumes, but it was snubbed in other categories. --T.O. and Hey, Jude!
