Manhattan

“ Manhattan” The town never looked more beautiful, thanks to Gordon Willis’ stunningly atmospheric wide-screen black-and-white cinematography, than in Woody Allen’s 1979 valentine to his hometown. The romantic comedy revolves around a twice-divorced comedy writer named Isaac Davis (Allen) who is dating a 17-year-old high school girl ( Mariel Hemingway), only to end up falling in with the mistress (Keaton) of his best friend. Meryl Streep plays his lesbian ex-wife. The opening montage of Manhattan set to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” is so amazing it’ll give you goose bumps. United Artists
