In 1989, Jim Henson worked out a deal to sell the Jim Henson Co., owner of the Muppets, to the Walt Disney Co. for $150 million. The deal was designed to allow Henson more time to concentrate on the experimental and creative projects he loved and less time running the multimillion-dollar Muppet brand. However, on May 16, 1990, Henson died from a bacterial infection. The contract with Disney was left unsigned, and Henson's family decided to keep the company private.
