3. Frankenstein's Monster
Its alive! Boris Karloff and make-up artist Jack P. Pierce created a lumbering Hollywood icon (and an enduring Halloween costume) with their version of the patchwork man and his flat-skull, neck bolts and that graveyard shade of green. The image was endlessly borrowed too, including by Scooby Doo, The Munsters and Young Frankenstein.
Did you know? In Mary Shelleys novel, the monster is described as yellow-skinned with flowing black hair.
