This historical drama stars Fassbender as Bobby Sands, a volunteer of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who led a hunger strike in 1981 to protest the British government's removal of inmates' political statuses. The movie dramatizes events in prison leading up to the hunger strike's formation and Sands' eventual death. "Hunger" marks the first of three projects Fassbender has worked on with director Steve McQueen thus far (others include "Shame" and "12 Years a Slave"), and earned the actor a British Independent Film Award. To prepare for the role, Fassbender reportedly stuck to a 600-calorie-per-day crash diet.
