'The Awful Truth' (1937)

Though the heavy-hangs-the-heart bio-pic "The Life of Emile Zola" won the best film Oscar, the academy gave the best director Oscar to Leo McCarey for his frenetic work on this classic screwball romance about a divorced couple (Cary Grant and Irene Dunne) who still love each other.
