Robert Elswit / Columbia Pictures
Angelina Jolie plays a CIA officer who is accused of being a KGB sleeper agent and must go on the run while she attempts to clear her name. The title role was originally written for Tom Cruise but was heavily rewritten (obviously) when Jolie took on the project.
Oscar potential: Director Phillip Noyce directed Michael Caine to an Oscar nomination in "The Quiet American" in 2002, and his Jack Ryan thrillers -- "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" -- show that he knows his way around political action. Jolie could land a lead actress nom, and the film could benefit from the expanded best picture race.
Review: Times' critic Kenneth Turan explains, "The actress continues to prove she can handle guns, grenades and the bad guys even if the story line is implausible." Read the entire review.
