Audiences loved "Scream," Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's hip reinvention of the slasher flick. They even dug "Scream 2," with its endless self-references to sequels and their storytelling rules. But with the third film, Williamson had moved to his series "Dawson's Creek" and Craven was reduced to featuring cameos by Jenny McCarthy and Kevin Smith. The hipsters who liked being in on the joke before started to feel the joke was on them, and "Scream" was finally killed once and for all.
