( Carolyn Cole / December 4, 2012 ) KABUL, AFGHANISTAN--NOV. 24, 2012--The family of Abdel Shakur, including 5-year-old Agira, are refugees from Lagman Province, where they were threatened by the Taliban. None of Shakur's 10 children go to school. An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 internally displaced people live in informal settlements around Kabul in search of jobs and shelter. With winter coming, many fear a return of the bitter cold that caused many deaths last year. (Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times) |
