TAKING IT IN STRIDE: Runner Mary Slaney, formerly Mary Decker, was heavily favored to win a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. In the 3000 meters final, she collided with South African Zola Budd, fell down and injured herself. She was unable to resume the race. Now she lives in Eugene, Ore., with her husband, discus thrower Richard Slaney.
